Nature Reserve Gorges of San Venanzio - Raiano (AQ)
The guided Nature Reserve of the Gorges of S. Venanzio is a protected natural area established by the Abruzzo Region Law n. 84. It covers an area of 1107 hectares, it is located in the territory of the Municipality of Raiano, in the Province of L'Aquila. Geographically it is located in a central position in Abruzzo and the Parks system and is an ecological corridor between the Majella Park and the Sirente-Velino Park. The Reserve contains within itself two distinct morphological aspects. In the western part, that of the Gorges, the river Aterno flows impetuously between two rocky cliffs overhanging: at the exit of the river from the Gorges, we find the spectacular and evocative Hermitage of San Venanzio (destination of centuries old devotion and tourist) that marks the transition to verdant floodplain. In the eastern part everything changes and becomes sweeter, the slopes diminish and the valley floor connects through a series of natural terraces to the town of Raiano. The part of the Gorges is rich in species of particular environmental interest and has obtained the environmental recognition of "site of community interest". In the territory, where the wild nature of the places has preserved a unique and intact habitat, there are a great variety of floristic and faunistic species; thanks to the presence of rocky areas, birds, especially birds of prey, have found the ideal habitat for reproduction. Among the many peculiarities that make the Reserve unique, the perfect balance between the preservation of the natural environment and the presence of man, with the many traces left over the centuries.
