"Zompo Lo Schioppo" Nature Reserve - Morino (AQ)
The Zompo Lo Schioppo Nature Reserve is located in the heart of the Apennines almost as a junction between the Simbruini mountains, the Cantari and the Ernici mountains in the Valle Roveto. The area that falls within the territory of the Municipality of Morino takes its name from the waterfall "Zompo lo Schioppo" whose water precipitates, in a marvelous scenery, from a very steep limestone wall making a jump of over 80 meters. The aquifer, contained in a system of still unknown karst cavities, rises after the winter rains, escapes and generates the waterfall right at the contact between the calcareous banks and the impermeable rocks below. It is an example of intermittent karstic spring that annually extinguishes in the summer and autumn months.
The area of the Reserve, which extends a little more than 1000 hectares, is largely covered by a tall beech forest, surrounded by high altitude pastures; at lower altitudes the beech forest gives way to a mixed forest.
Very beautiful is a forest of large beech trees, located between the floor below the waterfall and the stream, where numerous specimens are impressive and with tortuous shapes, between the streams that run around.
In the town of Grancia there is the Visitor Center where there are more than the Offices of the Reserve, also the Naturalistic / Anthropological Museum divided into various sections of particular interest.
